Description
Climate change and poverty are increasingly recognised as interlinked global problems, but responses often focus on their scientific and economic dimensions only. Too often women’s views, needs and participation are excluded from climate change responses and development initiatives. Women are perceived as climate ‘victims’ with little consideration for the contribution and leadership they can provide in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
It’s a waste of talent – and a missed chance to make climate programmes more effective and sustainable.
Gender equality matters in climate programming and this event explores the reasons why. Panellists debate what “inclusive” programming looks like in practice, and if climate programmes in cities pose any special challenges or opportunities for advancing gender equality compared to those in rural areas.
Speakers present original insights on the benefits and challenges of pursuing climate compatible development from a gender perspective, drawing on Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and Practical Action projects in India, Kenya and Peru.
