Description

If all the evidence demonstrated that a certain aid intervention was better for beneficiaries, and more cost-effective and efficient to deliver, in almost all contexts, you would assume it would be the default way of delivering aid.

You would be wrong.

Cash transfers, despite all the evidence pointing to their benefits, currently make up only 6% of all humanitarian aid. But a cash revolution is slowly picking up speed.

In his report on the World Humanitarian Summit, Ban Ki-moon called for cash to be the preferred and default method of support – conditions permitting. The influential High Level Panels on Humanitarian Cash Transfers and Humanitarian Financing have also both put forward ambitious agendas related to cash transfers, with scaling up cash identified as a key priority. A system-wide scale-up of cash can enable greater choice, support the dignity and empowerment of affected populations, create economic multipliers that strengthen local markets, and deliver assistance more efficiently and effectively.

This World Humanitarian Summit side event sees leading thinkers putting forward their propositions on how aid agencies, donors and governments can join the cash revolution – and revolutionise humanitarian aid in the process.
