We define public engagement as those initiatives where members of the public have been recruited or invited to collaborate or engage in dialogue with scientists and other professional stakeholders through participatory or deliberative means. The study assesses the benefits of engagement with science for the public, for scientists, for institutions and for other actors, including industry.
