Voices from the source: struggles with local water security in Ethiopia

What are the physical, social, economic and political drivers of water insecurity in different locations in Ethiopia? How have different communities responded to situations of water stress?
What should be the public policy and institutional priorities to improve resilience to water stress at a local level, and reduce the negative impacts on communities? This assessment explores local water security in two very different sites in rural Ethiopia – a pastoral district in the eastern Somali region (Shinile), and a somewhat remote agricultural district in the south (Konso).

Views amidst violence: can perception surveys improve aid in fragile states?

Aid policy and programming in fragile and conflict-affected situations often assumes that investing in improved service delivery, justice and security can contribute to state-building and peace-building. Surveys are increasingly used to better understand the attitudes and perceptions of people in conflict-affected countries but their impact on decisions about aid interventions is less clear. This public meeting, organised by the Secure Livelihoods Research Consortium (SLRC) and hosted by ODI will explore the challenges associated with delivering perception surveys in fragile and conflict-affected situations (FCAS), share findings from two surveys in Haiti and Afghanistan and assess how far these two perceptions surveys have successfully influenced aid policies.

The impact of EU sugar policy reform on developing countries

The objective of this report was to assess the implications of further reform of the EU sugar regime on Afro-Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) and Least Developed Countries (LDC). To do this, the outlook for the EU sugar market was modelled under a range of scenarios and the viability of the sugar industries in LDC/ACP countries that currently rely, to a greater or lesser extent, on sales to the EU market was assessed. The report then draws on this analysis to highlight potential impacts on poverty and livelihoods in affected countries and discusses possible transitional assistance measures to mitigate negative impacts.
